Uhra Simberg-Ehrström (1914-1979)Ryijy rug “ Four Colours”wool1958 / 1979The Friends of Finnish HandicraftThe ryijy rugs belonging to the oldest tradition of textiles in the Baltic region. The ryijy rugs of Uhra Simberg-Ehrström have been awarded prizes at the World Exposition of Paris in 1937 and the Triennale di Milano in 1951, 1954, 1957 and 1960. Simberg-Ehrström took the play of colour, resulting from the combination of varied tufts, to its extreme. The “Four Colours”-ryijy looks as if it is made up of four blocks of colour when, in fact, yarn in 70 different hues were used in the making. (af heimasíðu 15. júní 2011).
