Ásmundur Sveinsson (1893–1982) var einn af frumkvöðlum íslenskrar höggmyndalistar. Hann ánafnaði Reykjavíkurborg verk sín og heimili eftir sinn dag. Listasafn Reykjavíkur býður upp á afsteypur af völdum verkum Ásmundar sem eru gerðar í takmörkuðu upplagi og unnar af myndlistarmönnum.

Sculptures

Artist Erró was born in Iceland 1932 and now works and lives in Paris. He is one of the most well-known contemporary Icelandic artists. Reykjavík Art Museum preserves a large collection of works by Erró. Limited edition prints signed by the artist are for sale in support of Reykjavík Art Museum.

Exhibition catalogue published in connection with a retrospective of the works of Kristín Gunnlaugsdóttir at Reykjavík Art Museum,&nbsp; Kjarvalsstaðir in 2025.

STEINA - End of exhibition offer 4.900kr
The first comprehensive monograph in over a decade celebrating pioneering video artist Steina.
Published for the exhibitions at MIT List Visual Arts Center and Buffalo AKG Art Museum, this book brings renewed recognition to Steina (b. 1940, Iceland), tracing her work from early collaborations with partner Woody Vasulka to independent explorations of optics and non-anthropocentric subjectivity. It follows her practice from downtown New York to Buffalo to New Mexico and Iceland's landscapes, featured in her immersive video environments of the 1990s and 2000s. Combining imaging technologies with reflective orbs, Steina reoriented humanity's relationship to nature and expanded media access to the natural world.
With contributions by scholars Gloria Sutton, Joey Heinen, and Ina Blom.
Born Steinunn Briem Bjarnadottir, she studied violin in Reykjavik and at Prague's State Music Conservatory before emigrating to New York in 1965. By the late 1960s, she focused entirely on video, cofounding The Kitchen in 1971. Her work has been exhibited at Centre Georges Pompidou, Whitney Museum, and internationally.

Owl&nbsp;carries clear author characteristics from Ásmundur Sveinsson with its solid form. His work usually contains a distinct reference to nature, history or literature. The owl was one of the distinctive symbols of Athena, the goddess of wisdom in Greek mythology. Sveinsson’s&nbsp;Owl&nbsp;is preoccupied with gaining knowledge by reading a book.

Ásmundur Sveinsson, Owl

Worship, 1941
Quite a few sculptures by Ásmundur Sveinsson show the connection between mother and child, and the mother is often prominent. Ásmundur was greatly inspired by women and depicts their many sides in his work. In&nbsp;Worship, the female appears as the noble mother who embraces her child lovingly and in protection. This is one of the last sculptures which the artist created in his home at Freyjugata in Reykjavík.

Women's Initiative in Icelandic Art in the Eighties
The exhibition Swell brings together works by nine artists who navigated and took part in changing the local art scene in the eighties. Their presence and persistence contributed to a broader feminist movement that not only reclaimed space but amplified women’s artistic practices, reshaped the discourse around visibility, representation, and artistic agency.
&nbsp;The exhibition and this accompanying publication are the result of research conducted by Becky Forsythe, who held the temporary research position at the Reykjavik Art Museum. The museum was awarded a Grant of Excellence by the Icelandic Council of Museums in 2021 to research the role of women in Icelandic art history in collaboration with the department of art studies at the University of Iceland. Swell is the third and last project implemented within that context.

Havoc is the eighth exhibition in the Reykjavík Art Museum’s autumn exhibition series at Kjarvalsstaðir. These mid-career retrospectives survey work by artists who have already made valuable contributions to the history of Icelandic art—and who presumably have much more to offer. Our aim is to explore a wide range of subjects, conceptual approaches, and media, and on this occasion, we encounter painting as a platform for storytelling and social critique. Two types of posters were made for the exhibition Jónsi: Flood in Hafnarhús.
 The first poster shows the work without people and the second with people in the space.

A valuable book&nbsp;documenting&nbsp;Borghildur Óskarsdóttir's life work with a review of her key works, photos from her career and curator Aðalheiðar Lilja Guðmundsdóttir's essay about the artist as well as an article by art critic Æsa Sigurjónsdóttir.
