Jóhannes S. Kjarval, Lifandi land 1931–1945

This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition "Kjarval - Lifandi land 1931–1945" at Kjarvalsstaðir Museum in 1997.

Kjarval proved to be a true prophet when he said in a 1922 interview that he relied on Icelandic nature to be a "perfect school for him, like other nations' artists". It took almost a decade before these words came true and Kjarval turned to landscape painting with true intensity. Kjarval's landscape paintings reflect his artistic intuition and ability to interpret the nuances of nature in all seasons, in all weathers. But he goes even further. In the lava, unearthly beings such as angel or elves appear, the stones speak, nothing is visible.

The exhibition "Kjarval - Lifandi land 1931-1945" is intended to make an assessment of this fruitful period in the artist's career and is a direct continuation of the exhibition "Kjarval - Mótunarár 1895-1930" which was held at Kjarvalsstaðir in the autumn of 1995. You can see Kjarval's works when he has reached full maturity and has become one of the most original and unique artists in the country.
