Current exhibitions:

HAFNARHÚS

Erró: Remix – including a selection of Scapes

This exhibition presents key works by the artist and offers an opportunity to explore his diverse themes, including critiques of consumer society, political conflicts, and the overwhelming flow of information that characterizes contemporary life.

KJARVALSSTAÐIR

Kjarval and the 20th Century: When Modernity Anchored

The exhibition features works of visual art by Icelandic artists spanning approximately six decades following the turn of the 20th century. The works cover the period during which the painter Jóhannes S. Kjarval was active. By viewing Kjarval’s career alongside the works of his contemporaries, one can trace how visual art changed and evolved over time.

Guðrún Kristjánsdóttir: Traces

Guðrún Kristjánsdóttir’s exhibition in the West Gallery of Kjarvalsstaðir brings the vastness of nature closer to us. Guðrún has established a distinctive position in Icelandic contemporary art through works that examine the relationship between humans and nature, shaped by Iceland’s weather and light. She approaches nature as a living force, where stillness and energy meet, and unexpected beauty emerges in quiet moments.

ÁSMUNDARSAFN

Ásmundur Sveinsson: Wonderland

This exhibition takes us back in time and into Ásmundur’s studio, offering insight into what happened behind the scenes as the artist searched for the most suitable forms to realize his ideas as they emerged.

Wonderland: Remnants

The exhibition Remnants at Ásmundarsafn presents works by six artists who were granted studio space at the museum. In this special project, Wonderland – Works in Progress, which took place during the winter of 2025–2026, the participating artists had the opportunity to work in close dialogue with the museum’s space, the spirit of Ásmundur Sveinsson, and the museum’s daily activities.

Wonderland: Open Workshop

This exhibition invites children, families, and all museum visitors to take part in a creative process that explores form, materials, and ideas in an open and accessible way. The workshop focuses on Ásmundur Sveinsson’s working methods — how he experimented, repeated processes, and engaged in close dialogue with materials. Emphasis is placed on simple and varied materials and a craft-based approach, where the creative process itself matters more than the final outcome.
