In her Flatland Sirra Sigrún (b. 1977) juxtaposes structural stasis with movement by integrating video with text, movement and sculpture. The title Flatland is a reference, among other things, to a book of that title published in 1884, a satirical portrayal of the social hierarchy using the language of mathematics and geometry.
The work also alludes to art-historical and ideological reflections on society, the relationship between the individual and larger sectors, and the permeating pulsation between them.
Sirra Sigrún studied art at the Iceland Academy of the Arts and at the School of Visual Arts, New York.
She has shown her work widely both in Iceland and abroad, among other places at the Reykjavík Art Museum and at the Tate Modern in London. Sirra Sigrún is one of the founders/owners of the Kling & Bang Gallery in Reykjavík, and is one of Iceland‘s leading artists.
