 **Kjarvalsstaðir – Daði Guðbjörnsson**  
Gallery talk with art critique and writer Ragna Sigurðardóttir.. The painter Daði Guðbjörnsson’s exhibition is inspired by the long and eventful voyage of Odysseus. Guðbjörnsson is not registering the voyage as such in images, but rather looking at the Odyssey as a fable of the soul spiritual search where the paintings manifest the body of that soul. Men get captivated by delusions in life and are led astray, like Odysseus was. The paintings are therefore, like the Odyssey, a manifest of delusions. The exhibition is divided into two sections, one with large scale paintings from the last three years, the other with older works from 1998-2008. Guðbjörnsson was starting out as a painter when the proverbial «New Painting» first emerged in Iceland, and his older works are characterized by crude and spontaneous presentation. His style has since then evolved towards a more tender and refined expression.

 The painter Jóhannes S. Kjarval was known for his eccentricities that challenged Icelandic society and its bourgeois values. The exhibition examines the idea that the artist’s eccentric behaviour and strange actions might be interpreted as performance art. Were they a part of the artist’s creative work-process and therefore containing a conscious artistic meaning? Artist Huginn Þór Arason is the instigator and curator of the project.

Curator Jón Proppé moderates a talk on literature in the 1960s. Pianist Tinna Þorsteinsdóttir plays works from the same period.. What happens when a new paradigm in art takes over from another? Does one simply merge into another or are there conflicts and cross currents? The mid-1960s saw a dramatic generational shift in Icelandic art.

  
The landscape art that had dominated the first half of the century no longer answered the call of the times and while abstraction had gained many followers in the 1950s, its influence was already waning.

  
Similar changes took place in literature, theater and music – the spirit of experimentation was felt everywhere. The new generation wanted something entirely new and was prepared to look in the unlikeliest places to find inspiration.

  
The exhibition explores the exciting new art produced in this period and atmosphere on the cultural scene as a new art began to emerge. **Artists:**

Family program organized in collaboration with The Icelandic Equestrian Association.. The exhibition is curated by arthistorian Adalsteinn Ingólfsson. The horse has been an important subject to Icelandic artists from the beginning, either as the center focus in a painting or as a supporting role in landscape paintings. On show are oil paintings and three dimensional works by Iceland’s most distinguished artists from the beginning of the 20th century to present days, presenting the horse from different angles.

Gallery talk with the participation of artist Helgi Þorgils Friðjónsson and Hanna Styrmisdóttir, curator of the Icelandic pavilion 2007.. The Venice Biannale takes place once every two years and is claimed to be one of the world’s most important forums for the dissemination about the current developments in international art. In the year 2009 seventy seven nations took part in the Biennale and the number is still growing. As groundwork for the exhibition is a newly published research of Iceland’s participation in the Venice Biannale in Italy, which is first of its kind ever made on the subject. Icelandic artists have had their representative at this major international contemporary art exhibition for fifty years but their regular participation did not start until the year 1984.

50 Years of Icelandic Art at the Venice Biennale

 Reykjavik Art Museum announces a two fold drawing competitionin connection with its exhibition Erró – Drawings. The competition consists of two categories, one for children in 7th to 10th grade in Icelandic compulsory schools and the other for the citizens of Iceland in general. Thirty of the best drawings will be selected for an exhibition at Hafnarhús, and generous prices will be awarded for the best drawing in each category..

Artist’s talk with Björk Viggósdóttir.. Björk Viggósdóttir (b. 1982) graduated from the Art Academy of Iceland in 2006 and has since produced a number of videos and installations. Björk works with colors, emotions, signs and other things from the everyday, which she brings to other dimensions by creating for them new perspectives and settings. In her art Björk likes to encourage her audience to use all their senses for viewing her work by using combinations of different media in her works. Viggósdóttir has exhibited her work across Europe, the United States and in Iceland where she frequently collaborates with composers, musicians, dancers and other artists in both solo and group exhibitions. Curated by Yean Fee Quay. Björk’s exhibition will be the last project in the D-gallery series for unforeseen future. The series has been on since February 2007 aiming at presenting young artists whom have not had the opportunity to display solo exhibitions in an official museum.

 **Ásmundarsafn – Homage**  
Gallery Talk with artist Magnús Árnason and biologist, Dr. Guðmundur Eggertsson.. Magnús Árnason´s installation Homage, in the dome of the Ásmundarsafn art museum, refers to Louis Pasteur´s (1822-1895) experiment who´s findings conflicted with the theory of spontaneous generation.

Magnus’s work, whether in his sound-pieces, sculptures or performances, stand on a vague line between the real and unreal, fiction and facts. In his recent work, he has worked with nature and natural history; moving away from the mythological references seen in his earlier work. Researching the realm of science and its history, questioning any one true method of its field and rather backing up in order to rediscover ‘truths’ or aesthetic qualities otherwise hidden from us. Magnús Árnason (b.1977) graduated from Akademie der Bildenden Künste in 2003, Vienna. Previously he studied both at I.M.U. School of Music, Reykjavik and the Technical College in Hafnarfjordur.
