 The Comic Strip, or the 9th medium of visual arts, is the subject of the exhibition NINE. In this Comics Festival the works of dozens of Icelandic, Scandinavian and North-American comic strip authors and visual artists are brought together, posing more questions than they can answer. In addition to the Gisp! group and other Icelandic artists in this medium, the Scandinavian artists from Optimal Press and the Canadians from Drawn & Quarterly the authour of Maus, Art Spiegelman, and the English artist Dave McKean are presented in depth. Last but not least the works of Erró will be exhibited in light of their relationship with international comic strips..

Erró - Aesthetics and Politics

 This exhibition focuses on political paintings by Erró. Politics are an extensive part of Erró's art and may be divided into clear categories: References to the Second World War, Vietnam, Mao and Maoism, East-West relations, the general political situation in the 1970s and 1980, and treatments of individual politicians. Disregarding the political content of these works and the artist's standpoint, they are all part of the visual narrative system which has carved him a niche in the art world..

The summer exhibition at Hafnarhús presents a selection of contemporary art from the collections of the Reykjavík Art Museum. A selection of works from 1970-2010 by 50 artists will be in the exhibition. Many of Iceland‘s best-known artists working today are featured in the show, including e.g. Ólafur Elíasson, Ragnar Kjartansson, The Icelandic Love Corporation, Gabríela Friðriksdóttir and Hreinn Friðfinnsson.

The origins of Icelandic contemporary art can be traced back to the rebellion of the “SÚM generation” (SÚM – Association of Young Artists) against the dominant position of abstract painters in Icelandic art in the early 1960s. That generation introduced innovative ideas into art training and established new connections abroad. That meant that the following generations of artists looked farther afield; and the fifty artists whose work is shown here have pursued postgraduate art studies in no fewer than ten different countries in Europe and North America. Those diverse influences are reflected in the great variety of the exhibition. Many different media are employed, and subjects are highly diverse. The show includes, for instance, site-specific installations, minimalist sculptures, concept art in a range of media, performance-related video art, and works based on research.

Subjects run the gamut from internal meditation on the nature of art to social critique and the deconstruction of received ideas about “the North” and Iceland’s cultural heritage.  While Icelandic artists have brought many ideas back with them after their studies abroad, their ideas and approaches have continued to evolve in a new environment on their return to Iceland.  The ferment that has taken place, and the discourse which has emerged over the past half-century, have made their mark on Icelandic art – but the diversity is a fact, which this exhibition seeks to bring out.

The Reykjavík Art Museum is Iceland’s largest art collection, comprising about 17,000 works, including a general collection of works by numerous Icelandic and foreign artists, in addition to collections of the works of three leading Icelandic artists: Erró (1932– ), Jóhannes Sveinsson Kjarval (1885–1972) and Ásmundur Sveinsson (1893–1982).

 The works from Harro’s pig project and from The Finnish Way of Life translate easily across time and borders. The questions that Harro raises with his series of flags, for instance—flags full of holes, flags stretching, swelling, shrinking, ripping, splitting, crumbling, melting and burning—can and should also be asked about the Icelandic way of life. The crisis in the Icelandic national identity in the wake of the crash calls for discussion in the critical terms that Harro offers in his strikingly simple and forthright manner. Equally, Harro’s play on business logos of large oil corporations—Smell, Essto, Gulp and BB—are readily understood across time and borders as they raise pertinent questions about current environmental issues and globalization. And the complacency and self-conceit that Harro depicts in the pig project is immediately understood by anyone, young or old. **Programme**

Gallery talk in connection with the exhibition.. The purpose of the exhibition is twofold. First, the intention is to introduce the Finnish artist Harro, and his important contribution to contemporary art, to Icelandic people and, secondly, to create a dialogue around the critical message of his work. The exhibition will concentrate on Harro’s pop-art period and present many of his best known works from 1968 to 1972.  Among works in the exhibition are works based on the Finnish flag and business logos will also be shown. The intention is to immerse Icelandic audience in the specific context of Harro’s approach by presenting a number of pieces from his best known series of work. The works come from the Turku Art Museum, Wainö Aaltonen Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, and the artist’s own collection. Harro will be present at the opening of the exhibition.

The introduction of Harro in Iceland as a significant but overlooked Nordic artist will be combined with introduction of the Icelandic Pop-Artist Erró at the Turku Art Museum. Besides being significant figures in the history of contemporary art, both Harro and Erró and their production continue to stir discussions, stimulate research and act as a catalyst to artists and key actors inside popular and subcultures alike.

To start with the latter concern, an exhibition of Harro’s early work is particularly timely at this junction in Icelandic history. As the country is slowly recovering from the economic collapse of 2008, the population is going through critical examination of its values and its way of life.

 At Hafnarhús, works are always on display which provide insight into the work of Erró. The theme of this exhibition is art history itself: over the years, Erró has established a close and creative relationship with that history.  Erró is well known for creating his own visual world in his collages; and in this exhibition we see works in which he has borrowed images and fragments of pictures by some of the leading artists in history, such as Picasso and Léger. He also references the work of lesser-known artists of different periods. In that way Erró may be said to write his own version of the history of art, through his works. Erró and Art History

 Since 1989, Erró has donated more than 700 collages to the Reykjavík Art Museum, a considerable collection and national treasure that continues to grow. Following the recent update to collages in the Erró collection, this exhibition presents these works alongside others that span the entirety of his vibrant art career. Throughout the exhibition, it is possible to trace Erró’s commitment to collage as a step to creating other artworks, and a means to continue to narrate unexpected stories.

Erró (b. 1932, Ólafsvík) lives and works in Paris, where he arrived in 1956 by way of Norway, Germany, and Italy. He was among the most prominent figures of the European avant-garde of the 1960s and is associated not only with the renewal of pictorial figuration, due to his invention of narrative collage-paintings, but also with the Happenings movement and experimental cinema. Although Erró’s work is often, rightly, attached to artistic groups like Surrealism, Narrative Figuration or Pop art, it cannot be reduced to any one of them.           Collage has formed the basis of Erró’s artworks for over sixty years, beginning early on with his Meca-Make-Up series in 1959-60, and resulting in more than 30,000 collages today.  Through collecting, cutting, pasting and then painting Erró has freely mixed and quoted found material, transforming it into dynamic, striking and jarring visual collisions. In doing so he lends new meaning to the abundance of images that can be gleaned and culled from history, current events, world influences and our everyday lives.

**Easter opening hours**  
Reykjavík Art Museum is closed on Easter Sunday. Otherwise open as usual. In Hafnarhús, the focus is on exhibitions of progressive art by recognised national and international contemporary artists.  Hafnarhús is also home to the works of Erró which are permanently on show. 

For general visits to the Reykjavík Art Museum, the ticket is valid for 24 hours so you can come and go in all three of the museum’s locations during that time: Kjarvalsstaðir, Hafnarhús and Ásmundarsafn.

**Entrance**
The entrance to Hafnarhús is from Tryggvaga. There is a sliding door that opens automatically and is barrier-free. When you enter, you will see the reception on the left.

**Parking**
There are several parking spaces behind Hafnarhús on the Geirsgata side, which is accessible from Tryggvagata. There are also a number of parking spaces in the covered car park in Hafnartorg, which is accessible from Geirsgata and in the parking garage at Vesturgata 7. All of these are payable parking lots run by the City of Reykjavík.

**Bikes and electric scooters**
Bike racks are to be found by the City Library in Grófin.

**Public transport**
Buses no.1, 3, 6, 11, 12, 13, 14.

**Baby strollers**
In Hafnarhús you can store prams and borrow light strollers. Large strollers are not allowed into the exhibition halls for security reasons.

**Cloakrooms and lockers**
To the right of the ticket office there are lockers for bags and backpacks. Strollers, backpacks, large bags, umbrellas and other bulky items are not allowed into the exhibition halls for security reasons. A cloakroom can be found in the hallway where the lockers are.

**Toilets**
Toilets can be found both on the ground floor by the ticket office and on the 2nd floor by the coffee facilities. All the toilets on the 2nd floor are non-gendered. Accessible toilets are to the left of the ticket desk on the ground floor and in the same place as the other toilets on the 2nd floor. 

**Elevator**
There is an elevator between the floors of the museum, opposite the internal staircase on the ground floor.

**Chairs/sitting facilities**
The exhibitions change regularly, but you can usually expect to find benches to sit on in all the exhibition halls. If there is no bench, there are stools that visitors can request at the museum’s reception. 

**Multipurpose hall**
There is a multipurpose hall on the ground floor, facing the courtyard. There is no step to the multipurpose hall.

**Guided tours**
Guided tours of individual exhibitions are regularly held and advertised separately. The museum staff welcome groups by appointment.

**Stimuli**
Stimuli differ from one exhibition to the next and the reception staff is happy to provide information on what to expect in the exhibition halls. Most of the time, the museum is a quiet place to visit, but sometimes there are video works with sounds that can cause irritation. Lighting in the exhibition halls can be strong and is sometimes fluorescent.  

**Quiet spaces**
On the 2nd floor there are facilities to sit down, have a snack and rest. There is coffee and water available for guests.

**Blind and visually impaired**
You enter the museum on the ground floor. There are no steps at the entrance and the doors open automatically. There is an elevator on the ground floor of the building, opposite the staircase that is furthest from the entrance to the museum.

**Guide dogs**
Guide dogs are welcome in the museum.

Hafnarhús

 In 1963, Erró travelled for the first time to New York and came into contact with Pop Art, which was coming into vogue at the time. For the next few years he worked in different media, such as performance art and experimental cinema, in addition to painting. He soon became one of the pioneers of Pop Art and European narrative figuration. Erró has lived in Paris for more than fifty years; he usually spends part of the winter in Thailand and in summer he stays at his house in Formentera, Spain. Guðmundur Guðmundsson, otherwise known as Erró (b. 1932), is undoubtedly one of Iceland's best-known contemporary artists. After studying in Iceland, he was admitted to the Oslo Academy of Fine Art at the age of 20. In 1954 he studied at the Florence Academy of Art and later in Ravenna, Italy, where he focussed on mosaic technique. He moved to Paris in 1958, where he was accepted by the local Surrealists with open arms.  The collection has grown steadily over the years; Erró has continued to add to the gift and in addition works have been purchased for the collection, which now numbers about 4,000 pieces of art. Exhibitions from the Erró collection are a regular fixture at the Hafnarhús site of the Reykjavík Art Museum, with the purpose of giving as clear an image as possible of the diverse character of the artist's works.

[Art fund of Guðmunda S. Kristinsdóttir](https://listasafnreykjavikur.is/listasjodur-gudmundu-s-kristinsdottur) In 1989 Erró donated a large collection of his works to the City of Reykjavík – a total of about 2,000 items. 
  The collection includes paintings, watercolours, graphic art, sculptures, collages and other works spanning the artist's entire career from his youth. In addition to the art works, Erró gave the city an extensive collection of private correspondence and other documents relevant to his artistic career. These rich sources are of great value for all research on the artist Erró and his time.
