In the Reykjavik Art Museum, families with children of all ages are warmly welcomed.

The museum offers a varied programme for its youngest visitors, encouraging them to explore art through play, creativity, and curiosity.

Regular family tours, art workshops, events, and courses offer children and adults the opportunity to explore art together in a relaxed and creative environment.

All three museum locations feature dedicated family spaces where visitors can pause, create, and enjoy time together.

Kjarvalsstaðir

Located at the eastern end of Kjarvalsstaðir, Hvammur is a welcoming space for children and families, where visitors of all ages can sit down, relax, and enjoy time together. Here, guests can browse books, draw, and explore a variety of creative materials that encourage curiosity and imagination.

Hvammur also serves as a venue for a diverse programme of activities for children and families. Regular art workshops, children's courses, and family events connected to the museum’s exhibitions take place here throughout the year. In Hvammur, children and adults can experience art together, discuss what they see, and experiment with their own creative ideas.

Visitors are welcome to enjoy refreshments in Hvammur, either their own or those purchased from Klambrar Bistro, the restaurant at Kjarvalsstaðir, making it a comfortable and inviting place to pause and enjoy a museum visit.

Hafnarhús

On the lower floor of Hafnarhús, visitors will find a welcoming space for children and families. Equipped with a variety of creative materials, it encourages hands-on making, imaginative play, and artistic exploration, giving visitors the opportunity to develop and express their own ideas through art.

Guests of all ages are invited to relax and create together in a calm and inspiring environment. Activities and materials are often connected to the exhibitions on view at Hafnarhús, offering children and families an engaging and accessible way to explore contemporary art. On Thursdays, Hafnarhús is open until 10 pm, making it an ideal place to enjoy creative family time into the evening.

Ásmundarsafn

At Ásmundarsafn, visitors will find Undraland (Wonderland), a creative family workshop space inspired by the work of Ásmundur Sveinsson.

In the museum you can find a special secret drawer filled with colours, books, clay, and a range of creative materials that visitors are free to explore and use at their own pace. The space encourages experimentation, imagination, and hands-on making, allowing children and adults alike to create in a relaxed and informal setting.

And for the grown-ups, there is always a fresh pot of coffee waiting at Ásmundarsafn, making it a welcoming place for the whole family to spend time together.

For Children and Families

Pearl Necklace

The Pearl Necklace, or Perlufestin, is a sculpture trail dedicated to women artists in Hljómskálagarður. It offers an opportunity for families and visitors of all ages to enjoy the outdoors together while exploring art in a public setting. Along the trail, visitors can reflect on the role of art in public space, discover different artistic styles, forms, and themes, learn about the history of gender equality, and engage with the artworks through observation, discussion, and play.

Reykjavík Art Walk

The app provides information on all public artworks in Reykjavík. It also features a fun game with three levels of difficulty, making it an engaging way for children and adults alike to learn about art. Perfect for both indoor and outdoor exploration, the app combines discovery, play, and learning as visitors explore Reykjavík’s public art collection.
