What is your favorite artwork in the Reykjavík Art Museum's collection?
Last spring, a voting game was held at Betri Reykjavík under the title Our Art. It gave people the opportunity to choose artworks for an exhibition at Kjarvalsstaðir from the collection of the Reykjavík Art Museum. The exhibition opened on Culture Night, features the works that received the most votes from the public. The public voters are entirely responsible for the curation and selection of works, and the number of works is determined by the space available in the hall. The selection is a diverse and interesting mix of artistic creation from different eras. It presents a unique perspective on this common property of the city's residents, which in total numbers 17 thousand works.
The voting project is part of the Reykjavík Art Museum's 50th anniversary, 1973-2023, where the collection is being celebrated in various ways. The works that received the most votes are Hringfarar by Anna Rún Tryggvadóttir, Köttur III by Matthías Rúnar Sigurðsson and Uppspretta by Bryndís Jónsdóttir. A total of 26,192 votes were cast and the number of works that received at least one vote is 2,396
Inside the exhibition hall is a block where small exhibitions will be set up under the title Their Art. where the museum invites its collaborators and regular visitors over the years to choose works according to their own taste. The small exhibitions last just over a week at a time and are spread out over the exhibition period. Guest curators are Klambrar bistro, Bræðurnir Baldursson, Hlutverkasetur, The Icelandic Dance Company (which is also celebrating its 50th anniversary this year) and students at Víkurskóli.
