Iceland Academy of the Arts graduation exhibition 2017

Reykjavík Art Museum houses the graduation exhibition of students from the fields of Fine Art and Design and Architecture from the Iceland Academy of the Arts in Hafnarhús.

Text from the curator:

It starts with a gesture, a movement we choose to do.

We make a sign, we move a line, we hit a note and for a second all that we knew is suspended. With time we may give this a more definite shape, rehearse it, frame it, even give it a title - but all this complexity rests on a fragile instant of discovery.

In our post-truth era it is increasingly difficult to build single narratives or trust categories. How then do we touch an audience, how can we affect reality and offer alternatives through the act of exhibiting work?

An Art Academy feeds as much on sketches, failed attempts, imperfect work, and process as it does on expertise and precise techniques. In this upcoming exhibition from the fields of design and art, we have offered our students the possibility to underline the tension between these two dimensions of their practice: the uncertainty of the process, and the sharpness of the act of giving a form. The intuition is that the public can find meaningful gestures at all stages of the working process, and take pleasure in retracing the genealogy of the exhibits.
