The Fire Within

Many of Ásmundur Sveinsson’s sculptures convey feelings of deep loss and heartache. This exhibition in the Ásmundur Sveinsson Sculpture Museum is built around the emotional core of the artist but represents a new approach to his work. The exhibition is organized into three themes and is organically integrated into the museum itself, which was the artist’s former home and studio.

The first theme shows the sensuous woman as goddess and lover, as opposed to protective mother, which is a common and wellknown theme in the sculptor’s work. The second theme focuses on Ásmundur’s more subjective works, which depict the atrocities of war and the animality of man.

The museum’s dome (Kúlan) contains his ideas on outer space; Ásmundur was very interested in progress in the field of space research during the 1960s. New frontiers were opening up and Ásmundur saw this as an opportunity to renew his creative energy. The exhibition’s curators are the artist Steinunn G. Helgadóttir and the art historian Kristín G.
