DesignMarch: After Stone

The material research project explores how industrial stone waste can be reclaimed and transformed into powdered dyes, utilised in manufacturing a ceramic product of higher value.

Stone waste generated during lathing processes becomes a fine powder that can be repurposed as a pigment to colour ceramic glazes. Typically, such secondary raw materials are either discarded or downcycled but reusing the waste in this manner allows the materials to be used to their fullest extent.

The ceramic collection presented as part of the project consists of porcelain interior wall tiles that exemplify both small and large-scale applications of such waste. Although stone waste primarily comprises basalt, which may seem limiting in terms of the colour spectrum, in this project, it is viewed as a challenge to achieve significant diversity in shades and hues. After Stone gives waste a new identity and contributes to the built environment, with empathy for craft and circular solutions.
