Gabríela Friðriksdóttir: Versations Tetralogia

An exhibition of the work the Icelandic artist Gabriela Fridriksdottir displayed at the Venice Biennale in 2005.Her multimedia installation combines painting, sculpture, and bas-relief as well as the four-video piece Tetralogia, which was created in collaboration with Björk Guðmundsdóttir, Daníel Ágúst Haraldsson, and many others. Architect Birgir Þröstur Jóhannsson designed a façade to compliment the content of the work and also designed the interior structrure for Friðriksdóttir’s installation.

Gabriela Fridriksdottir’s polyphonic installations are distinguished by a meditative narrative structure, which is fed by mythology and the occult, and breaks with rational logic.  Her creative drive has been influenced by a compulsion to investigate the irrational and mysterious.  Born in 1971 in Reykjavik, she studied at “Rymi”, School of Art (1993–4) and the Icelandic Academy of Art, Reykjavík (1994–7). Recent solo exhibitions include Bob von Oursow Galerie, Zurich 2008, Spielhaus Morrison Galerie, Berlin, 2007; The Osram Gallery, Munich, 2006, and Migros Museum, Zurich, 2006. Her work is in many public collections including National Gallery of Iceland, Reykjavik; Reykjavik Art Museum; SAFN Collection, Reykjavik; Osram GmbH, Munich, and Migros Museum, Zurich.
