Lunchtime with a designer: Brynhildur Pálsdóttir

Brynhildur Pálsdóttir product designer talks about her plate and candle holder Shadow and Toes.

The shadow of Ásmundur Sveinsson's sculpture, Giantess from 1948, turnes into cast iron. The giantess becomes a shadow on a table - a plate under hot vessels. Ásmundur said that trolls reminded him of mountains - that the mountains were trolls. The interplay of man and nature in Ásmundur's work takes on countless images and is a source of endless ideas and emotions. The Water Carrier, the work of sculptor Ásmundur Sveinsson, from 1936–37, shows a barefoot woman carrying two buckets of water. Her legs are strong and reflect stability and grounding. Sturdy body parts - hands, fingers, feet and toes - characterize many of Ásmundur's works and are reminiscent of the power of the workers. Concrete legs that step on the table carry candles to illuminate sweet moments. The feet draw inspiration from Ásmundur's workers.

The event is a part of Reykjavík Art Museum´s exhibition at Design March - Design for Sculptor Ásmundur Sveinsson. Exhibition of products designed by five product designers for the museum shop at Ásmundarsafn. Ásmundur Sveinsson's visual world has been a source of ideas for new useful products dedicated to the artist's memory and his contribution to Icelandic cultural and handicraft heritage.

The other designers are Björn Steinar Blumenstein, Friðrik Steinn Friðriksson, Hanna Dís Whitehead and Tinna Gunnarsdóttir.
