Discussion about Art and Radical Pedagogy

Event location:
Hafnarhús

A discussion about art and radical pedagogy will be held at Hafnarhús on Saturday 16 January from 3 p.m. -5 p.m in connection with the exhibition Back to the Sandbox. The curator Jaroslav  Anděl as well as the artists Michael Joaquin Grey and Priscila Fernades will talk about the works in the exhibition and open discussion about the relationship between art and radical pedagogy.

The exhibition Back to the Sandbox features works by artists who pose questions about the nature and role of education, and see creativity as a key factor in our society. The exhibition makes references to ideas of reformers and visionaries in the field of education, and the contradictions in current educational systems are brought to light.

Michael Joaquin Grey discovers surprising connections and parallels between the original concept of kindergarten, invented by Friedrich Fröbel in the late 1830s, and various modern cultural developments, including toy design and modern art movements. While Grey rediscovers Fröbel as the inventor of kindergarten, Fernandes celebrates the Catalan anarchist Francesc Ferrer, another educational reformer of the early twentieth century.

Fernandes‘ installation in the exhibition ¿Y el arte? The Book of Aesthetic Education of the Modern School, has a double function and will be host for the event.

The discussion starts at 3 p.m. and takes place in English. Free with admission.

Free entrance with a museum ticket and for holders of Annual Pass/Culture Pass.
