The Philippines is the world's leading "exporter" of nurses. Nursing schools purposefully produce nurses to work in other countries, and up to 70% of all Filipino nurses work outside their home country. In Iceland, most new licenses are granted to Filipino nurses, and up to a third of nursing staff in nursing homes are from the Philippines. The health care system in Iceland relies on the hard work of the Filipino workforce.
This performance is a reflection on the overlap between the stigmatization of Asian women and the healthcare industry, the idea of care and how it can feed old racist stereotypes.
Lucky 3 (est. 2019) is a collective founded by Darren Mark, Dýrfinna Benita Basalan, and Melanie Ubaldo; Icelandic artists of Filipino origins.
