Artwork of the day: Gingham, Cadmium Red

Hildur Bjarnadóttir, Gingham, Cadmium Red, 2011.

Artwork of the day is Gingham, Cadmium Red from 2011 by Hildur Bjarnadóttir.

Hildur builds the surface of her paintings from scratch, she takes identical linen threads to those who are used in canvas for artists, dyes them with acrylic paint, weaves them into a gingham pattern and stretches them across the frame. The work is a traditional painting and a woven material at the same time. She uses craft methods to throw a critical light on traditional ideas about paintings and attempts to destroy the distinction normally made between crafts and arts.

Here you can look through images from Hildur‘s exhibition at Kjarvalsstaðir in 2016.
