Accessibility at Ásmundarsafn

Reykjavík Art Museum – Ásmundarsafn is located on Sigtún in Laugardalur. Ásmundarsafn regularly hosts exhibitions of the works of Ásmundur Sveinsson (1893-1982) and by contemporary artists. Ásmundur was a pioneer of sculpture in Iceland and designed the building mostly by himself between 1942 and 1959. The surrounding garden holds numerous works by Ásmundur that have been enlarged or created specifically for the outdoors.

Entrance

Entrance is through an automatic door that swings inside, with a low threshold. Once inside, the reception and museum shop are located on the left.

Parking

There are quite a few parking places in front of the museum.

Bicycles and Scooters

Bicycle stands are located at the front of the garden, to the left.

Public Transport

Buses no. 2 – 5 – 15 – 17 – 14 – 4.

Baby Strollers

The museum building has a storage place for prams. Large prams are not allowed in the exhibition galleries, for security reasons.

Cloakroom and Lockers

The cloakroom is behind visitor services, up a few steps, and there you’ll also find lockers for bags and backpacks. Prams, backpacks, large bags, umbrellas and other bulky items are not allowed in the galleries, for security reasons.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms are located by the stairs, opposite the cloakroom.

Lifts

A wheelchair lift to the cloakroom is located in reception. There is still no lift down into the galleries. Please ask the visitor services staff to assist with entering the galleries through a side door.

Chairs/Somewhere to Sit Down

The exhibitions vary regularly but you can expect to find chairs in the galleries.

Picnic Facilities

The picnic space is in the lobby, by reception. Coffee and water are on offer.

Guidance

Guidance around the museum is scheduled at regular intervals and advertised specifically. The museum staff is happy to receive groups following an agreement.

Hreyfihamlaðir

There is decent access to Ásmundarsafn. The main door has a low threshold and there is a lift from the lobby to the cloakroom and bathrooms. From there, a staircase lies up to the top floor, but there is no lift.

Disabled Parking

There is a marked parking spot for people with disabilities in front of Ásmundarsafn.

Wheelchairs

There is no wheelchair available at the museum.

Generally, the admission ticket is valid for 24 hours, so you can come and go in all three museum buildings during that time: Ásmundarsafn, Kjarvalsstaðir and Hafnarhús.

Stimuli

Stimuli varies, depending on the exhibition, and the museum staff can inform visitors each time what kind of exhibition they can expect. The museum is usually a peaceful place but sometimes there are videos with audio that can be disturbing. Lighting in the galleries can be bright and sometimes there is fluorescent lighting.

The top floor, Kúlan (The Dome), has particular acoustics and can be uncomfortable.

Quiet Spaces

Ásmundarsafn is normally a quiet place. You can sit at a table in the lobby.

Guidance

Reykjavík Art Museum regularly advertises special opening hours for people with autism or sensory processing sensitivities. During these hours, all stimuli is set according to individual needs (for example regarding light and sound).
